Becoming A Christian

Steps to becoming a Christian:

Nobody is perfect

Romans 3:23 [NLT] “ For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.”

Being right with God starts with admitting the obvious – you’re not perfect. Anything you’ve ever done, said, or even thought that violated God’s guidelines for living – that’s “sin.” The problem is, the standard to be with God is absolute perfection. Why? Because sin brings death.

The Result

Romans 3:23 [NLT] “ For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.”

When God created the world, it was perfectly pain-free. No heartache, no suffering, no death. He gave humans free will, though, and our ancestors chose to reject His directions and go their own way. Sin brought corruption to the world, and with it, separation from our creator. The Bible calls this spiritual death. God wants everyone to spend eternity with Him in a pain-free heaven, and He’s not willing to allow sin through the gate and doom us all to endless suffering. That’s why, in His love, He made a way to fix things.

The Solution

Romans 5:8 [NLT] “But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.”

Jesus wasn’t just a good man or a teacher, He was God’s own Son. Because He lived a perfect life, God was able to put the punishment for every sin throughout time on His shoulders. Jesus was executed, paying the price for sin, and God raised him back to life, forever defeating spiritual death. It’s a perfect solution, but only for those who accept it.

The Choice is Yours

Romans 10:9-10 [NLT] “ If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.  For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.”

God gave free will in the beginning, and it’s that same ability to choose that He gives you today. He’s ready to apply Jesus’ sacrifice to pay your sin-debt, to forgive and accept you, but He has two conditions. First, you have to believe that Jesus died for you and was raised back to life. Not just face value, but really believe it. Second, you have to affirm Him as “Lord” (as ruler, leader, boss) and as best you can, live your life the way He wants. The moment He’s back in His place as Lord, everything will change. You can know and interact with God in this lifetime and be sure that when you breathe your last, you’ll be welcomed into heaven with open arms.

Are You Ready?

Being right with God isn’t a moment kind of thing. It’s a journey, a way of living from here on out, but it does start with a first step and it’s not one to be taken lightly. Be sure to think this through: making God “Lord” will mean saying “no” to yourself at times so that you can say “yes” to Him. It comes with the greatest benefit though, peace and friendship with the God who made you. If you’re ready, then just talk to Him. He knows your thoughts, but He wants you to say it. If you’re not sure what to say, it should go something like this:

“God, I realize I can never be good enough for Your standard. I’ve used my free will to live for myself, instead of following your direction. I’m sorry. Please forgive me. Jesus, I believe that you died to pay the price for my sin, and that you were raised back to life. Be my Lord. You be in charge, and I’ll do my best to live Your way from now on.”

What Now?

Tell somebody! Just like you wouldn’t go on a cross-country trip without directions, you shouldn’t set out on the God-life on your own. Share your decision with us. All the angels in heaven are cheering for you! Welcome to God’s family.
